Sandy is an abstract painter whose work is firmly rooted in her experience of the declining urban landscape. The abandonment and decay surrounding her first studio in Luton strongly influenced the development of the highly textured and complex surfaces that she creates, as well as inspiring her 3D works using recycled materials. A need to understand and explore the resonance of the compelling landscape before her, led to a highly experimental and investigative approach to mark making, surface and materiality.
Since relocating her studio to Hertfordshire, Sandy’s fascination with materiality and surface has continued to evolve as her work has naturally become much looser and freer in its style and more optimistic in its colour palette. Using music to fully absorb herself in the painting process, Sandy employs a type of automatic drawing to create a rugged, mixed-media surface on the canvas which she then works into through an intense, and at times aggressive process; adding and then subtracting the paint. The resulting multi-layered works explore issues of history, identity and transformation, inviting the viewer to absorb themselves in the sumptuous surfaces before them while questioning what lies beneath.
In February 2015 Sandy was appointed as a Fellow with The Digswell Arts Trust.
Her work is held in a number of private collections.
