A Collection Of Moments
Graham A Matthews and Susan Chester
‘Time is not measured by clocks but by moments’
Since the dawn of the human race and the creation of those first drawings etched onto the walls of dark caves, mankind has tried to capture a moment in time. The art palette may have changed but the principle among artists and photographers today remains the same, to capture a moment of time and record it for all eternity, for once the moment has passed its lost forever. Sometimes you will never know the true value of a moment until it becomes a memory.
The boundaries between photography and painting crossover as the two key elements to create both are light and time. The former measured in fractions of a second, the latter perhaps in hours, but both striving to capture a perfect moment to share.
Graham’s contribution to the ‘Collection of Moments’, showcases images that Graham has gathered over his long career, many of which have never been seen in any exhibition before. These range from landscapes, flora and fauna, close ups as well as cityscapes, villages and portraits of the people he has met, taking you on a journey of discovery through a series of scenes captured by his camera, each in its own recorded moment in time. The photographs acting as a return ticket to a moment that has otherwise gone.
Susan’s work echo’s these sentiments, such as her stark Indian ink black and white images of telephone wires which form a series titled “TALK TO ME”. They are evocative of how important phones became during the long lockdown months, each call a link between two people separated and as the callers were finally connected through technology, a magic moment in time was created and shared. This is further illustrated in her landscape paintings, each from photographs taken earlier this year whilst driving around Yorkshire. They illustrate moments spent visiting family and friends after nearly two years, the paintings creating a series of personal memories, each one acting as a trigger to a collection of moments.
Both artists invite you to the their exhibition, to immerse yourself in their ‘collection of moments’
